Why Should You Support #EndAcidSale?

Hey!

With Pinterest, beauty blogs and a number cosmetic schools, girls have unlimited options to learn how to transform themselves into glamorous divas. Makeup and hairstyling isn't just for the girl that wants to make every heard turn, even girls with simpler taste love making themselves beautiful. Be it a pimple, dark circles, or an acne spot, beauty experts have found a number of ways to help us cover our flaws. But what if these flaws were irreversible? Ask any acid attack victim how does it feel to have their youthful glow and beauty taken from them forever. They'll never be able to look in the mirror the same way again.

How deadly is acid attack?

...
Worst of all, acid attack victims feel ostracized from society. Family members and friends avoid eye contact and in some cases, they have cut off contact altogether. With no one in sight, what is an acid attack survivor to do? The obvious answer is to accept fate and rebuild life. However, it isn't so easy. In most cases, victims become heavily depressed and need psychological help. In addition, the government usually doesn't recompense victims in a timely manner. Many survivors are unable to pay for their medical bills. They need on-going medical care as acid rapidly eats away organs and causes considerable damage to the underlying bone. They also can not find jobs as acid impairs vision and causes physical handicap.

What are the medical effects of acid attacks?
As most damage is done to the face, the primary areas that are hit are the eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
  • Victims have had their skills deformed. They have also lost their hairs.
  • Other victims have their ear cartilages completely destroyed and as a result have become deaf.
  • There also a number of women who have had their eyelids damaged. They are now blind.
  • Some women have experienced damage to their lips. With their lips burnt off, it has become increasingly difficult to speak and eat. Their teeth are also fully exposed.

Prevention: #EndAcidSale
Make Love Not Scars is an NGO started by Ria Sharma. With the help of Reshma Khureshi and other victims, Make Love Not Scars is working towards abolishing the sale of sulfuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid. These acids are typically sold at jewelry stores and at motorbike repair shops. Many organizations want acid sales to be monitored and licenses for all acid traders.
